I think the size and heterogeneity of the country definitely plays a big role. To your first point, you say politicians will use any opportunity to rally up their base, but that just seems to be way easier in the US, that is the whole problem. People identify so much with their party that they will just change their opinions on topics to match with the party. I mean that's where I think the problem of the two party system comes in again, you can't just switch to another party that for example has the same fiscal policies, but has different opinions on climate change for example. So if you don't want to totally switch your views which probably won't happen, you just have to convince yourself that your favourite party had the right opinion all along.
