I think what's important to keep in mind is that a triathlon is *not* a navigational exercise. It's possible the athletes have never run this course before and aren't responsible for signage. Honestly just getting kind of tiresome and sad. My dad (1943-2020) spent his entire life calling the US a 'Banana Republic' saying that for all the good they did in ww2, everything that followed was cultural imperialism and what not.
