The electoral college itself isn't even the problem. It's the winner-takes-all approach that States implement to determine their allocations. If states decided their allocations based on the popular vote within that state then the electoral college result would mimic the national result (except in extreme cases) and there would be nothing illegal about that. If the President were elected based on who received the most votes from electors in the President's jurisdiction (hardly a controversial proposition) the States would continue to have equal rights through the Senate.

Honestly just getting kind of tiresome and sad. My dad (1943-2020) spent his entire life calling the US a 'Banana Republic' saying that for all the good they did in ww2, everything that followed was cultural imperialism and what not.
