The US has 51 Presidential races. Each state (plus DC) has Electoral votes relative to its population size, minimum 3 up to California's 55. If a candidate gets a plurality of votes in that state, he/she wins all of the EVs. The exceptions are Maine and Nebraska, where each Congressional district counts for 1 EV, but they rarely split. So in reality, your vote doesn't count for much if you are in a highly partisan state like Idaho or Vermont. In the "swing states", the polls show very close races, so voters in Florida, North Carolina, Iowa, etc. have a lot more influence on who wins the Presidential race.

Honestly just getting kind of tiresome and sad. My dad (1943-2020) spent his entire life calling the US a 'Banana Republic' saying that for all the good they did in ww2, everything that followed was cultural imperialism and what not.
