Ok. So they are not supposed to stray away from what the state says. Why have human electors anyways if it is even discouraged with fines? Just say how many elector votes is a certain state worth. Take the human element out of it. This all goes back to how America is not the same country it was in 1787 when the constitution was ratified. People were more loyal to their state than they were to their country. That means their interests were more in line with the people who were running for president from their own state rather than the best choice candidate. Electors existed to help balance that out because otherwise there would never actually be an overall popular president elected.

Honestly just getting kind of tiresome and sad. My dad (1943-2020) spent his entire life calling the US a 'Banana Republic' saying that for all the good they did in ww2, everything that followed was cultural imperialism and what not.
