Most states have an all-or-nothing vote for their presidential candidate. So once more than 50% of voters in each state vote for one candidate, all of the votes for that state go to the one candidate. And the number of electoral votes are not exactly proportionate to the number of people in that state. It's based on members of Congress, so every state gets an "extra" 2 votes (out of 538 total) regardless of state size. So, two big differences from popular vote: winner takes all, and extra 2 votes for each state.

Honestly just getting kind of tiresome and sad. My dad (1943-2020) spent his entire life calling the US a 'Banana Republic' saying that for all the good they did in ww2, everything that followed was cultural imperialism and what not.
